Introduction

Geotagr is a great application for iOS that allows you to utilize the built in GPS functionality of your iPhone; enabling logging, tracking and tagging of GPS data for your photos.

What I particularly like about this tool and why I have personally added it to my toolbox is the ability to export GPX style datasets which can be then utilized by a myriad of other applications. One such option is to utilize this data with Lightroom to GPS tag photos taken with non GPS enabled cameras such as my EOS-1’s.

It also allows you to visualize your track and travels with plugins such as WP-GPX-Maps to overlay the data with Google Maps. For example, on a recent trip this summer to Manitoba to visit extended family, I logged a drive one day from Winnipeg to Lake Manitoba, back to Lake Winnipeg and ultimately back to Winnipeg itself.

The example above shows a brief example of how the data can be utilized for other purposes than geotagging photos. This particular trip I did not take much in the way of imagery rather this is more of a way to remember the trip in the family scrapbook.

What I find extremely interesting is the actual application of this toolset for visualizing the elevation along side of the actual distance and route taken. I almost never use my Garmin GPS units any more however I always have my iPhone with me.

The downside…

This tool is constantly on and it consumes a great deal of battery power, enough that it tears down any endurance my iPhone 5S would normally have, thus an external power source is an absolute requirement.
